The Cost

There are lots of costs that come along with being apart of a sorority.  Just to rush you have to pay around $50, this is before you are even guaranteed entrance into any sororties. The costs definitely don’t end once you get accepted into a house, each month you have to pay you’re dues which are around $100 and not to mention all of the shirts you are going to have to buy with your greek letters on it and all of the gifts you have to buy for your big. Also there are a lot of organized dances and events where you will have to buy theme coordinated shirts or outfits not only for you but also the guest you are bringing. They don’t really tell you any of this information before you rush so make sure you are ready for all of these expenses. They do say that this price is worth it in the end because of all of the things you do within the community and how you could even be offered jobs because of connections with the sorority.

The Reputation and Stereotypes

There are lots of stereotypes surrounding greek life and especially sororities, lots of people assume they are just “paying for friends” and that only white blonde girls are apart of these chapters. There was a situation where a sorority made a recruitment video and got a lot of hate for it and were forced to take it down because it only showed pretty blonde girls blowing glitter and people thought that it represented sororities wrong. Lots of colleges say that their chapters focus on being diverse and focusing on academics but its a bit harder to get rid of these stereotypes when these are the types of videos that go viral. I personally think that at Chico State particularly our sororities do a good job at being diverse and a well rounded sisterhood that also focuses on academics from what ive seen around campus.
